Role of English

1. Explain the role of and use of English in the Country

- How many people speak English?
 
95.2% of Hong Kong's population is using Cantonese and English (38.1%).
some people don't want to use English. Because of Hong Kong's role as former British colony. They knew about it. Historically English was the sole official language of Hong Kong from 1883 to 1974. Chinese become the other language in Hong Kong from 1974 onward.

- How do they study/learn English?

Hong Kong' s education system is similar to English system. And They have great language school system for whose want to learn English.

There are Hong Kong's mainstream four education system.

• 3 years 5 years education for pre-school children
• Six years of elementary education
• 7 years of junior high school education (3 years teaching elementary, middle, and this course of higher education and 2 years 2 years)
• Professional education (bachelor's, bachelor's wealth, professional certifications, advanced diplomas)

 - How is English used in the country (in what ways: business, tourism,                 education, government etc.)?

Hong Kong government, the police, most businesses and shops are also used in combination of two languages. The Chinese are mainly used for the Cantonese.
All government officials, including police officers and immigration officials are required to have a communicative level of English.
In general, shop assistants, restaurant workers and hotel staff in the main tourist areas, such as Central, Wan Chai, Causeway Bay and Tsim Sha Tsui will be competent in English. Menus in restaurants in these areas will also be provided in English. Seeing as tourists are rarely outside these areas, it means English should be spoken throughout your visit.

- Are there any popular English phrases or expressions?

Some words and phrases widely understood in Hong Kong are rare or unheard of elsewhere. These often derive from Chinese, Anglo-Indian or Portuguese/Macanese.

A 'chop' is a seal or stamp, e.g. a "Company chop" is the seal or stamp of a corporation (It actually originates from colonial Indian English.) It is now used in some other Commonwealth countries as a non-official term
A Tai-Pan (or 'taipan') is a term used in the early 20th century for a business executive of a large corporation.
An amah is a term used in early 20th century for a live-in servant (from Macanese/Portuguese- ama nurse); now supplanted by "[domestic] helper"
A 'shroff' is a cashier in a hospital, a government office or a car park (parking garage).
"Godown" is a warehouse From the Malay "gudang".[8]
Nullah is a concrete-lined canal or an re-enforced creek bed used to contain run-off. Nullah entered the English language from Hindi. The word nullah is used almost exclusively in Hong Kong.
Lai see means red packets
'FILTH'/'Filth' (Failed in London, Try Hongkong[9][10]) is a slang expression used to refer to people who look for employment opportunities in Hong Kong after being unsuccessful in looking for a job in the United Kingdom
The word 'seldom' is used instead of 'rarely' in informal English - the word seldom is considered formal in English speaking countries.
A raffle is invariably referred to as a 'lucky draw'.
Jetso ("著數") is sometimes used to mean discount or special offer.[11] Also means pecuniary advantage
'Hong Kong foot', a literal translation of the Chinese slang term "香港腳" for athlete's foot


2. Choose one area of life where English is used and           explain in more detail

- Why is English important in this area?

In the past Hong Kong was British's colony and Free International City. So English was important. Nowadays business people can be good english speaker. And many other country people travel to the this city. Hong Kong is most famous shopping city in the world. People who in tourism,shopping business can be great English skills. It can be combine lots of world shopping people.

- Give examples

English communication is extremely important as Hong Kong is a multi-cultural city and international financial centre with many foreign companies having offices here. A high level of proficiency in English is essential if Hong Kong is to prosper in future years. Mainland cities like Beijing and Shanghai are already overtaking Hong Kong in many respects such as the number of multi-national companies that have moved their headquarters there. Hong Kong's competitiveness is dependant on a high level of English proficiency. As traditional industries fade or move away, tourism is increasingly becoming important for HK's economy. From waiters to shop assistants to taxi drivers the English standard has to rise for business to flourish here.

Homework Blog Post 9

1. How did you feel during the interview?

I did feel nervous. Because I was so afraid camera and I began to stutter. Its strange for me. But my partner, Lucas is kind. So I could good at the Interview. I think lol
And I found his age. Its very shocked to me. Because I was rude in the past. So I feel like Rude Younger Brother. I would like to sorry for my mistakes.
And Sun-Ah didn't feel nervous. I think she was friendly so she can relax during the interview. I think this assignment is good for us. Because It grow up our English skills.


2. What was the most difficult part of assignment?

last week I should go to the hometown, Seoul. And we have time to only Wednesday.  So we had one chance for recording video. Actually I had a first time at recording video something. So everything was awkward. And then the video has my mistakes.  In last Monday When I saw my video. I feel awkward, shy and strange. It so unnatural. And I couldn't think immediately. So I couldn't make good conversation. But Lucas was better me. He got a great communication skills.


3. What are some similarities between your English education and experiences and the         interviewees?

I think so similarities between Korea and China English education. Both country think English education is important. So there was many kinds of education system. And many student has same stress. So They spend the lots of time for studying English in the school. Its whole universe assignment. And Lucas has more experience than me.
But many students has great English skills, conversation and writing. So I' d like to contact to many English contents.

1. What is your name and age? 

 My name is Doo Seok Kim . Danny And 25 Years old.

2. What is your native country and language? 

 I from the Korea And My native language is Korean.

3. When did you start learning English? 

 When I was second grade in the elementary school, I went to the English Academy in the Cathedral. I was learned to from the ESL teacher. That was surprised to their pronunciation, accent, the voice of tone. etc. 

4. How did you learn English? 

 I studied English 3 times a for 1 hour in middle school. But Korean students should to go to the academy for English. So I went to go there, and I learned 2 times a for 2-3 hour in a day. Its long time. Many people think its good to spend the lots of time.

5. How do you feel about speaking English (be honest)

 When I was young before middle school, Its very pleasure to me. Because I love to learn English. But after middle school English class, many people have learned English because of the exam. Only for test. So I was tired. However before 4-5 years ago, I should to pick my department, Then I decided to liked English once again. And I choose the English Department.  Now I want to grow up my English skills. So I like to speaking English.

6. How is important is English in your country?

 I Think Its very Important. Because many Korean wants to be good English speaker like ESL people. And When we want to apply some company they want to know our English skills. English is so friendly our Korean life. So many people should to learn about English.


7. What is the most difficult thing in communicating in English?

 I think we can get to confidence. You can speak to other people, But If you get nervous you cannot think clearly. So we can practice natural communication skills.


8. Why do(did) you learn English?

 English is the most widely used language so that can be considered as a global language. Growing of multinational corporations, speaking English can be useful when apply and work at one of those companies where English will be obviously the first language. And whether you applying for college or getting a job, English is always a prior advantage in getting in.


9. Can you speak any other languages?

 I can speak only English, But I can writing and reading some Japanese. It is basic level. I still makes many mistakes.


10. What do you think is the point of learning another language? 

 It about purpose to learn. We can decided our own purpose. Such as test, get to the job, studying abroad etc. If you don't get the target. you can tired easily. So It should be fun to learn another language.

Dae Young announced this word. I'm interested in the car. This is compound word. Smart and key. Smart means that smart. So this keys are a lot of more features. If you have smart key, you can start only one button push. It is easy to how find to where my car is.
This is more comfortable than the traditional key. So many people have the this key. If I have the car, I will use this key. When I learned this word by him, I know we've got many experience than old people while technology advances.

It also save the gasoline and they can go more comfortable each other. When I lived in Houston, I went to the Korean church that biggest in the Houston. Korea has many public transportation. So I want to go anytime anywhere. But In America  If I don't have a car, I can't go anywhere. So in my church people rides many time. So I'd like to thanks to all my guys. Carpool is very good for me. When I see this word on Monday, I was glad an surprised. I want to thank to 려가 for reminded again.

Lucas introduced this word. This is blend word. Fanta is blend by fantastic and fabulous. so It means excellent and wonderful. This word often used as fashion term. "I would look so fantabulous." Actually I heard this word just few times. I didn't know it means good thing. So thanks to Lucas for know to correct meaning. Otherwise It used to different meaning. When we can use while we say good bye, "Have a good fantabulous day".

 First Word is Lonely. This word was created by Shakespeare , Coinage Word. I was shocked since I knew this word is made by him. Lonely was created in his text several, seems unlikely. It feels like cold, sorrow, cry, hug and brave. It's very command word so I never thought about to coinage or created. Actually I don't like this word. but If some people overcome loneliness, they became stronger and brave. we can see this happen just around us. such like the movie, Cast Away. The main character is so lonely alone in remote island, He made a friend , called by Wilson . and then he overcame loneliness. He got brave. When I saw this movie, I was just children . So I couldn't understand exactly. But I grow up, This film has lots of good message from other people. If you have the time, I recommend this movie.

 Second word is Impossible. This is prefix , affixes word. im- means not, no like bad meaning. So this word means you cannot do something. I like this word. because people can do anything. but many people think "I can not do this. because blah blah~" I think it just excuse. They determines their own limit lines, so it can be reduced. few years ago, I've seen the ads made by that Impossible is nothing. It was ADIDAS's. there were many sports superstars, Messi, Beckham and Rose. They told through the ads that will make themselves unavailable talking about the difficult time their experienced. When I see this ads , I think "Nothing is Impossible, the word itself says I'm possible." So this phrase is my life motto. When I get the high limit line, I can overcome that wall. Because I know the way how to take the wall.

 Last one is Loanword.I found this word in the google website. It from to the Italian American Immigrants. The Italian food are spread throughout the whole world. I think Rome was powerful in the world, Because of Italian culture would have been able to develop. Pasta is staple of Italian traditional food. pasta means noodle and various shapes. When we get the first meeting or blind date, man and woman think about what food is right to the first meet. And then many people came to the western restaurant. so do I lol. So pasta is one of the standard food in the blind date. I like cream pasta in one of them.  In Korea , we have many western restaurant. It delicious. I know, but I have something to worry that disappear to own traditional thing like food. clothes. I hope to next generation find to our own culture not only western culture. 

 

Third Assignment

First word is  N.B.A. It's Acronyms. Its from NBA official website, And Its means National Basketball Association. I know this word already. Before, created to this group, there were had to BAA(Basketball Association of America). in 1967 another association was made. It called by ABA (America Basketball Association). Unusually professional hockey league team chairmans was created to other basketball league, called NBL(National Basketball League). And then, ABA NBL joined the each other , So NBA was created. called the current name. I like playing basketball also watching that games. because I heard this word many times . When I meet other people who know about NBA , we will talk about it lots of times.

Second one is WFDS. This is Abbreviated word. It means Wet Floor Do Not Slip. I'm not sure, but I wanna pick this word. Because When I went to the U.S.A  last year , I worked in my cousin's donut shop. And I cleaned their shop with mop. And then my cousin said " we must take this sign , If we don't take it, we can go police.  " Its shocked to me . So I really careful when I cleaning. Actually, I come to Korea, I never seen this sign also, tell somebody. I think compared between Korean American, Korean is risk of awareness is lower than American this part. In Korea this situation is not ruled. So many people easy to think to the risk.

Last one is "BackPack" , Compound word. When I doing something , Its usually beside me. 
Backpack means Back and Pack. Back is human's back , Korean called "등" . And pack is put it something like clothes, stuff. Previously its makes cloth or leather . Today most thing made plastic and synthetic fibers, such as nylon. Now I'm student I will do own study or working and travel somewhere. So I always take my backpack such like this photo. I like red lol. When I was birthday , My friend gave to brand new backpack. It classic. That's why I love it.

Second Assignment

1. Illegal English Bible (1400s-1400)


Why did you choose this event? (Why is it interesting?)

  -  I am a catholic , so interested in the Bible. The interesting thing is that was illegal. 


What did you learn? 

  -  All over the Christian world, church services were conducted in Latin. It was illegal to                translate the Bible into local languages. (I think bible was only English. but it was
     wrong. and translated to  English was illegal. that is interested. )


What connection can you make to your life/world? 

  -  All of history was changed to be brave and sacrifice. many historical events show us. 
     People know about only result. but every events has a process.

2. Ben Jonson, The English Grammar (1640s -1640)


Why did you choose this event? (Why is it interesting?)

 - The person who created the basis of grammar in English. I want to know who make  
   grammar that hard to us. 


What did you learn? 

 - He considers syntax and spelling, and is one of the first writers to leave us a clear    
   indication of the pronunciation of English. and He was for other people to study and  
   unremitting efforts.


What connection can you make to your life/world? 

- He made ​​the basis of grammar, made ​​a lot of people look out, because the print is also in       Latin as well as English. And then, nowadays English grammar is important to all of people.

3. Sherlock Holmes (1900s-1904)


Why did you choose this event? (Why is it interesting?)

 - Sherlock Holmes is most popular mystery novels in the world. And It has movie too. 
   that was favorite thing is my movie list.


What did you learn? 

  - Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was scotsman and when he was writing Sherlock Holmes, he             based on science and technology. I think he was very important to observe the ability, so
    Sherlock Holmes has in a very excellent article.


What connection can you make to your life/world? 

 - Compared to other contemporary detective fiction focusing on the alibi of the 
   characters but It was evidence highlights the importance of Arthur Conan Doyle.
   The way to evidence that the combination of killer has given other novels , movies and
   drama techniques. that point will be the reason why a lots of fans love.

Hello   Let me introduce myself.

1.  I'm Doo Seock Kim, and I'm from the Korea, and my hometown is Seoul. I have the English name , so I prefer to be called Danny. I studied English in my university during in 3 years. First came to Gwangju because of school.


2.  My favorite thing is Public Transfer System. like bus, subway. There are moving so fast. And there are easy to find somewhere who want to go. I think It's important thing is living big city. And Second Thing is Mobile Service, like Internet speed. Korea have one of the fastest Internet speed.

3.  I'm interested in American Sports , NBA. It's my dream to visit in NBA Stadium. I want to go to Chicago is just one of them. Because Michael Jordan' s Status in Chicago. And My cousins live in Houston, So I want to go again. I would like to meet again to some people I met in the past.

 4. I can speak Korean and English. I studied English for over 10 years, but I Can't speak English well. since I studied in 10 years old. but my English level is beginner.I can listening, but speaking and writing is low level. my problem is hard to translated to Korean to English.

5.  My motivation for studying English was surprised experience. When I was heard English , it was shocking and gorgeous. And I wanted to understand other country people. And I think  studying English is must have to do, not should. 

6. My goal for studying English is without difficulty speak and write. When U.S.A went to live , I don' want to happening what difficulty by language. So I will do my best.
